Today Heathrow is the world's busiest international airport and the hub of the civil aviation world. Over 67 million passengers travel through the airport annually on services offered by 90 airlines traveling to over 180 destinations in over 90 countries
Heathrow Airport called London Airport until 1966 and now known as London Heathrow is a major international airport in London, England. It is the largest of the six international airports serving Greater London (the others being Gatwick, City, Luton, Stansted and Southend). Heathrow was founded as a small airfield in 1929 but was developed into a much larger airport after World War II. The airport lies 14 miles (23 kilometers) west of Central London on a site that covers 12.27 square kilometers (4.74 square miles). It was gradually expanded over seventy-five years and now has two parallel east-west runways, four operational passengers terminals and one cargo terminal
- TERMINAL 1:This terminal is used by all domestic and Irish routes along with some European and long haul destinations. Comprehensive developments have taken place at this terminal even though it is certain to be closed with the opening of the Heathrow East scheme. There are some fantastic shops in the terminal such as Burberry, Harrods, LK Bennett, Fat Face and the world famous toy store Hamleys.
- TERMINAL 2: was the oldest terminal building of Heathrow Airport that opened as Europa Building in 1955. Even the current site of the terminal will be closed down shortly as the construction of the Heathrow East scheme will start on this site. Both Terminals 1 and 2 will be replaced when this exciting new development is completed. It is expected to be a modern, environmentally friendly terminal
- TERMINAL 3:This terminal handles most of the long haul flights to and from Heathrow Airport. At this terminal, you can find the massive Pier 6 that had been built to handle the twin decks of the superjumbo Airbus A380
- TERMINAL 4:This terminal that opened in 1986 will now be refurbished due to the opening of Terminal 5. The refurbishments include extension and redevelopment of the forecourt so that a fresh face can be given to the terminal. Inside the terminal there are a whole lot of shops including Aspreys of Bond Street, Hermes and Ted Baker. The place also has eating and drinking options such as Starbucks and JD Wetherspoons.
- TERMINAL 5:The latest and the most important terminal at Heathrow Airport is Terminal 5 which opened in March 2008. It is the terminal where most British Airways flights land and take off. It can handle 30 million passengers and it has 60 aircraft stands. It is distinguished by the fact that it has the largest unsupported roof structure in the UK. It has glass walls and roof that afford stunning views of the surrounding countryside, the runways, Windsor Castle and even Wembley Stadium
